Filipino kids reap awards in int’l math tilt

EIGHT Filipino high school students took home a total of 20 medals and about 15 other awards in the 8th Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-cities Competition last July 25 at the Jilin University in Changchun, China.

Five teams composed of four members each were sent to the IWYMIC and they won eight silver medals, 12 bronze medals, 14 honorable mentions and a special award. They competed against 66 other teams from 17 countries.

Third placer in the individual category and winner of bronze medals were Ezra Joy Temploneuvo from Jesus Is Lord College Foundation, Kevin Lu Ong from Grace Christian High School , and Xavier School students Andrew Vincent Yap and Arnold Lindros Lau.

Victors in the team prize category and winners of the silver medals were Metro Manila Team A composed of Geraldine Beniqued from St. Paul College of Pasig, Aileen Giselle Chua from Grace Christian High School and Chiang Kai Shek College students Ervin Fredrick Dy and Jillian Kristel Sy.

Metro Manila Team B also won silver medals. Team B comprised Patrick Adrian Ong from St. Jude Catholic School, Franchesca Choi, Sharlene Dizon and Sherine Ann Koa of Chiang Kai Shek College .

The Philippines also sent another team from Mindanao that won bronze medals. The Mindanao Team is composed of Kevin Jonathan Dy of St. Stephen’s High School, Lu Kevin Ong, Ricci Ryan Rojo of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Andrew Vincent Yap. The Mindanao Team also won bronze medals for getting the highest pointer award in the group of Yellow teams.

The recipients of the 14 honorable mentions for the individual contest were Ervin Fredrick Dy, Aileen Giselle Chua, Jillian Kristel Sy, Patrick Adrian Ong, Franchesca Choi, Sharlene Dizon, Sherine Ann Koa, Hanz Martin Cheng of UNO High School; Alyanna Louise Uy of Immaculate Conception Academy, Kevin Jonathan Dy, Ricci Ryan Rojo, Mariel Alexis Dee of St. Paul College Pasig, Rafael Perea of Philippine Science High School – Main Campus, and Ma. Regina Paz Onglao of St, Paul College – Pasig .

Finally, the Philippine Team was also awarded the popularity award for their best performance in the cultural presentation.

The entire Philippine delegation to IWYMIC was trained by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines , composed of its president, Simon L. Chua, and other officers including Arvie Ubarro, Frederick Buiza and Alvin Edward.

The team leaders were Eduardo Dela Cruz, Robert Degolacion, Levita Portugal of Department of Science and Education – Science Education Institution representative and Joseph Wee while the deputy team leaders were Bernadette Baniqued, Kathryn Chua and Emily Uy.
